Select the Right Grease Consistency
Choose the appropriate NLGI grade based on bearing type, speed, and load. Softer greases (NLGI 0-1) are suitable for high-speed or low-temperature applications, while firmer greases (NLGI 2-3) are better for heavy loads and higher temperatures. Most industrial bearings use NLGI 2 grease for general applications.
Proper Relubrication Procedures
When regreasing, first clean the grease fitting, then purge old grease by adding new grease until clean grease appears at the seals. Allow the bearing to run for a few minutes to distribute the grease, then remove any excess. Over-greasing can cause overheating and premature bearing failure, especially in high-speed applications.
Grease Compatibility
Avoid mixing different types of bearing greases unless compatibility is confirmed. Incompatible thickeners can cause softening, hardening, or separation of the grease, leading to inadequate lubrication and bearing failure. If changing grease types is necessary, thoroughly clean the bearing and housing before applying the new grease.
